Learning

Learning is the process of acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences.

Learning is a process that:

  1. Is active– process of engaging and manipulating objects, experiences, and conversations in order to build mental models of the world.
  2. Builds on prior knowledge– and involves enriching, building on, and changing existing understanding.
  3. Occurs in a complex social environment– and thus should not be limited to being examined or perceived as something that happens on an individual level.
  4. Is situated in an authentic context– provides learners with the opportunity to engage with specific ideas and concepts on a need-to-know or want-to-know basis.
  5. Requires learners’ motivation and cognitive engagementto be sustained when learning complex ideas, because considerable mental effort and persistence are necessary.

How is online learning different from traditional learning?

In many ways, it’s not: online courses are just as educational and robust as their classroom counterparts.

The biggest difference between online and face-to-face learning is that online students can study from anywhere, and at any time.

In a classroom setting, both the instructors and the students have to be available in the same place at the same time. But everyone involved in an online course has the freedom to work at the time and place that best suits them.
